Pure stomach acid has a pH of 1.8 when it first enters the stomach, but is quickly diluted in the presence of food. Regardless, plant enzymes are not destroyed by the highly acidic environment of the stomach. They simply become dormant until reaching the higher pH levels in the small intestine, where they again become active and continue the digestive process.
A large body of literature now suggests that a variety of human medical problems relate to the loss of mutualistic gut microbes, whether because those mutualists failed to colonize during hyper-clean C-section births or were lost through use of antibiotics , or other circumstances. The pH of the human stomach may make humans uniquely prone to such problems. In turn, we might expect that, among domesticated animals, that similar problems should be most common in those animals that, like us, have very acidic stomachs.

What about alkaline water?
In Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and hypercalcemia, there are increased gastrin levels, leading to excess gastric acid production, which can cause gastric ulcers. but the acid is diluted in the stomach lumen to a pH between 1 and 3.
That’s why eating protein keeps you full longer than eating sugar. The pH of stomach acid usually ranges from 1 to 3. At its strongest, the pH of stomach acid just below that of battery acid!
What happens to gastric acid when you drink a lot of water?
Can you get gastritis on low stomach acid? It’s all very frustrating. Hi Eben, thank you for reaching out! You can safely test for low stomach acid on your own and if your symptoms improve upon supplementing with HCL, chances are you may have low stomach acid.
I hope that helped. When I am eating mostly vegetables, the fact that I have low stomach acid is not as painfully important, as meat is harder to digest.
Your likelihood of pneumonia increases by 120 – 160%, bone fractures go up by 120 to 310%, and, as an extra special bonus, stomach cancer goes up by 150 to 230%! All for want of a little acid that might not even be the problem to begin with.
until I appeared better. My mom told me that I was never quite the same baby after that incident. For the next 30 years I suffered with digestive issues and never felt really well. Melancholy, tired, symptoms of every vitamin deficiency I read about.
Recently the local pharmacy made an error on my prescription and only gave me half of my usual Omeprazole prescription. Rather than complain, I tried taking a single 20mg dose per day instead of the 40mg. Amazingly my clothes are starting to fit again after only one weak and I only suffered discomfort for a coupe of days.
We can’t tell you if you have high or low stomach acid – only your doctor can diagnose you – but burping is usually a sign of low stomach acid not high. Hi Jimmy – thanks for reaching out! The biggest sign you might be low in stomach acid is an inability to digest meat. The other symptoms you’re describing are in line with low stomach acid, too.
I feel that my bowel is being cleared out as if I have had a real detox. I am going to try to reduce the 20mg dose further for a couple of weeks before trying the HCL with pepsin. I strongly suspect that low stomach acid has been causing me many health problems recently including fatigue, I want to come off the PPI’s completely and hopefully live a normal healthy life. I will be buying some apple cider vinegar along with HCL tablets tomorrow but I understand that lemon juice in water first thing in the morning also helps. Hi Tom, thanks for reaching out.
If your dosage starts getting extremely high without any GI distress (step #3), you must use your GI symptoms as a guide instead. These include burping, bloating, farting, and stool consistency. Keep everything else the same in your diet as you wait for these indicators to change for the better.
