The camera allows the doctor to see damage to the esophagus, how severe the GERD is, and to rule out serious complications of GERD or unexpected diseases. You can start with your family or general practitioner (primary care provider). You may be referred to a gastroenterologist, a specialist in disorders of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
When you lay on your right side, stomach acid covers the lower esophageal sphincter. This increases the risk of acid leaking through it and causing reflux. The esophagus enters the right side of the stomach. As a result, the lower esophageal sphincter sits above the level of stomach acid when you sleep on your left side ( 55 ). Additionally, an analysis of controlled studies concluded that elevating the head of the bed is an effective strategy to reduce acid reflux symptoms and heartburn at night ( 10 ).
The US Food and Drug Administration approved the LINX Reflux Management System in March 2012. This device is designed to augment the lower esophageal sphincter.
Total dietary carbohydrate intake, refined sugar intake, glycemic load, and HOMA-IR (a measure of insulin resistance) were associated with GERD, but only in Caucasian women. A high-fat, low-carb diet benefited all women with GERD (both Caucasian and African-American), significantly reducing GERD symptoms and the frequency of acid-suppressing medication use. The degree of insulin resistance decreased threefold in Caucasian women. Soil-based organisms do not produce significant amounts of D-lactic acid, and are a better choice for this reason. In my clinic, I use a product called Prescript Assist when treating SIBO and GERD.
The LES is a ring-like muscle at the bottom of the esophagus that acts like a valve between the esophagus and stomach. Heartburn occurs when refluxed stomach acid touches the lining of the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the chest. Heartburn that occurs more than two times a week may be considered GERD, and it can eventually lead to more serious health problems.
Due to their high-fiber content, bananas also can help strengthen your digestive system – which can help ward off indigestion. One soluble fiber found in bananas is pectin, which helps move stomach contents through your digestive tract. And that’s a good thing – because food that sticks around will only continue to generate acid.
I never preferred any over-the-counter medications as it provides you with a temporary relief. It never takes care of the root cause, due to which the problem keeps re-occurring again and again. Upper endoscopy. Your doctor inserts a thin, flexible tube equipped with a light and camera (endoscope) down your throat, to examine the inside of your esophagus and stomach. Test results can often be normal when reflux is present, but an endoscopy may detect inflammation of the esophagus (esophagitis) or other complications. An endoscopy can also be used to collect a sample of tissue (biopsy) to be tested for complications such as Barrett’s esophagus. People are often referred to our surgeons for management of GERD and its symptoms.
