People with persistent symptoms of acid reflux or GERD should see a doctor. If you have severe, crushing chest pain – or pain in your left arm or jaw – seek emergency medical attention, since it may indicate a heart attack. People who are having a heart attack – or certain other heart problems – also often experience chest pain.
Again, if you’re an otherwise healthy person, it’s pretty likely that your chest pain is due to something less severe than a heart attack, like GERD. But, as Dr. Balark points out, you really never know, so you might as well get it checked out. Chest pain isn’t something you should have to live with, regardless of the cause.
I was diagnosed with GERD four years ago and I’m only 21. It is very hard and I feel that people who say “it’s just heartburn” are very ignorant. This is a lifestyle on it’s own. People with a normal esophagus would not feel anything from the pressure change or the presence of acid. The reason why some people have this extra sensitivity (hypersensitivity) to pressure or acid is not known. There are several different esophagus problems that can cause non-cardiac chest pain.
For example, stopping smoking and drinking less alcohol can all make a big difference to the discomfort you experience. Some foods are more likely than others to trigger reflux symptoms so you may find it helpful to look at how you eat as well as what you eat. Avoid late night, high fat meals so you don’t go to bed with a full stomach.
